Scripture:

Matthew 5:13-16

13 "You are the salt of the earth; but if salt has lost its taste, how shall its saltiness be restored? It is no longer good for anything except to be thrown out and trodden under foot by men. 14 You are the light of the world. A city set on a hill cannot be hid. 15 Nor do men light a lamp and put it under a bushel, but on a stand, and it gives light to all in the house. 16 Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father who is in heaven."

Homily

Today the Lord invites us to be his light in this world which is very much in a transition period towards fully digital and informatics with lot of hope and incertitude. For us Christians, Jesus is our light and once we decide to be in this light, we will be able to discern rightly and choose better. With many available source of information, we will be able to verify the truth and prioritise them according to gospel values. Like the moon, which reflects the sunlight, we must reflect in our decision and action this light, Christ in this world.

The prophet Isaiah helps us to understand how we can be in this contemporary world the light of Christ. If we want to be the lights in this world, we must put into practice all that God tells us in the first reading, "Share your bread with the hungry, gather in you the unhappy without shelter, ...... ... Then your light will spring like the dawn ... and the glory of the Lord will accompany you. "

We are not called to bear our own light, but that of the risen Christ, that of hope and joy. Since we represent the Lord of mercy and forgiveness, in our lives we must make this divine love visible by loving one another. People who are around us should taste this forgiveness in plenty when we are with them.

As a faithful Christian, always longing to be with the Lord, we will like to look up to heaven, and try to seek all that is able to please the Lord. Now, the first reading brings us to the people of God who suffer and who are victims of violence and pain. We must bring them liberation, for our God is a God who frees the people. How can a faithful remain connected with God and refuse to liberate His children?

Very often in our daily life, we want to live a life seine, and holiness. We want to decorate our lives with virtues and prayer. If a lamp is beautiful and pretty decorated, it is much better, but frankly, this is not the purpose of this lamp. What is important and is asked  is to lighten the surrounding and remove the darkness. Remove the shadows and fill the earth with an inexhaustible hope of the Lord that will make the people to live their life fully giving  the maximum fruit of divine love.

When the Lord tells us that we are the salt of the earth and the light of the world, he sends us like the missionaries who render a beauty to the lives of men by adding in their life little salt of the presence of the Lord so that others may taste his generosity. Like salt, which reveals the taste that is hidden in the meal, we must make visible this presence of God in their daily lives. Like light, we illuminate and show the world that love and forgiveness still exist. Through this light of Christ we assure the world that it should not despair. God is with us. Today, we are called to be this salt that gives flavour and that light that attracts the world to God. Amen.
