Évangile de Jésus Christ selon

saint Jean 10,22-30.

Scripture: John 10:22-30

22 It was the feast of the Dedication at Jerusalem; 23 it was winter, and Jesus was walking in the temple, in the portico of Solomon. 24 So the Jews gathered round him and said to him, "How long will you keep us in suspense? If you are the Christ, tell us plainly." 25 Jesus answered them, "I told you, and you do not believe. The works that I do in my Father's name, they bear witness to me; 26 but you do not believe, because you do not belong to my sheep. 27 My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me; 28 and I give them eternal life, and they shall never perish, and no one shall snatch them out of my hand. 29 My Father, who has given them to me, is greater than all, and no one is able to snatch them out of the Father's hand. 30 I and the Father are one."

The message

The last Sunday we have contemplated on the send part of today’s gospel and yesterday we have meditated on Jesus not only as the Shepherd but also the door which gives access to the Father. It is not only through Jesus and through His direction that we will know God, but essentially in Him, because He is the Door to enter in to God: “I and the Father are ONE.” Thus as ordinary human being, if we are able to understand the humanity of Jesus, in its fullness, we can easily understand the divinity of Jesus, which will help us to understand the Father, who is in Jesus’ divinity.

Looking at the persecution of the disciples of Jesus in Jerusalem which dispersed the disciples to other region with force and menace, for which we may regret then, but while contemplating the same menace we discover today with great joy, the means though painful then, today have given multiple conversion in this pagan world, where the disciples of Christ were called for the first time in the history of the Church as Christians.

There is nothing hidden in the wonderful work of the Holy Spirit in the spreading of the Good News. While praying for the Christian brothers persecuted in different part of the world, let us not forget that the grain buried and died will give 100 fold fruit. To have this fruit we should allow the Holy Spirit work in us and do all that is inspired by the Holy Spirit. As Jesus who feels that He is in the Father, we should too fell that we are in Christ. Without this unity in the Trinity, we can’t produce the fruit desired by the Father.

Commentary of the day

Saint Hilary (c.315-367), Bishop of Poitiers, Doctor of the Church
De Trinitate II, 8

“The Father and I are one.”

The Father is who he is, and we must believe that. As for the Son, our mind gets discouraged in trying to reach him and with every word we hesitate to make it heard. For he is begotten of the One who is not begotten, the only-begotten of the one who is the One and Only, truth come forth from truth, the living born of the living, the perfect one who comes from the perfect one, power from power, wisdom from wisdom, glory from glory, “the image of the invisible God” (Col 1:15)…

How shall we understand the only Son’s being begotten by the One who is not begotten?… This begetting is not a break or a division…: “The Father is in me and I am in the Father.” (Jn 10:38) He is not adopted, for the Son is the true Son of God and says: “Whoever sees me sees the Father.” (Jn 14:9) He did not come into existence like other beings, obeying a command, for… he has life in himself, like the one who begot him has life in himself (Jn 5:26)… The one who comes from the perfect One is perfect, since the one who possesses everything gave him everything. The Father and the Son each possess the secret of that birth.
